Zimbabwe’s second-largest city  Bulawayo has become  Zimbabwe’s Covid-19 epicenter as it is now leading in the number of Covid-19 positive cases.

iHarare has learned that Bulawayo has recorded three more deaths and 231 new Covid-19 positive cases bringing the total number of cases in the province to 419.

Bulawayo now has the highest number of cases in the country followed by Harare with 386 cases.

The Ministry of Health and Child Care announced that Zimbabwe has recorded 273 new Covid-19 positive cases bringing the total number of cases in the country to 1 362.

The death toll now stands at 23 following the three new deaths recorded in Bulawayo.

All the 231 new cases recorded in Bulawayo are all local transmissions, while Harare has also recorded 22 new cases of which all of them are local transmissions.

On the other hand, Midlands province has recorded 10 new cases of which all of them are from returnees. “Due to a backlog of sample processing at the testing NTBRL, Bulawayo has recorded 31 cases today, which were recorded over the last seven days, but were not processed. The cases will be distributed in the epi-curve according to the dates the samples were collected.”

“Today, we regret to report three deaths, two at the community level and one at the facility level. These deaths occurred in Bulawayo province. The community deaths were detected during routine post mortem as part of our Covid-19 surveillance,” reads the statement from the Ministry of Health and Child Care.

On Wednesday the government announced that it was going to tighten current lockdown restrictions and, introduce localized lockdowns in hotspots to try to curb the spike in infections. Because of the spike in local transmissions, testing in communities with high cases of local transmission such as Bulawayo was increased and the re-opening of schools was also deferred pending a review of the situation.
