Zvishavane town was hit by two devastating incidents over the weekend, causing destruction and loss of life. On Saturday, July 20, at around 2:00 AM, a fire broke out at a shop opposite the Makarios bus terminus. The shop, made of zinc sheets like Ecocash cabins, was completely destroyed by the blaze. Eyewitnesses say the fire started with a loud bursting sound, followed by flames rising from the roof. The shop had valuable goods like solar panels, solar batteries, gas cylinders, torches, radios, and touch batteries. Despite residents trying to put out the fire with buckets of water, everything was burnt to ashes. A horn speaker was calling people as the fire raged, drawing more attention to the disaster. The cause of the fire is still unknown.
Less than 24 hours later, on Sunday, July 21, a second tragedy occurred in Simango Village, Gudhuza area, Ward 4. Five people died overnight, suspected to be due to carbon monoxide poisoning after lighting charcoal to keep warm. The group was found lifeless the next morning. Police haven't confirmed both incidents yet, and more details will be released when official statements are available..
