A man who was beaten, chased, and later handed over to police during a recent anti-foreigner march in KwaZulu-Natal has been confirmed to be a legal South African citizen, despite being
accused by participants of being a foreigner. According to his account, he had joined the march believing he was supporting his country, but was instead targeted by the crowd because of his dark complexion and his inability to speak isiZulu.
He said he was attacked by the same group he had marched with before being handed over to authorities. Speaking after the incident, the man described feeling deeply hurt by what had happened and said he hopes his children will not have to face similar discrimination in their own country.
