A heart-wrenching road accident has claimed multiple lives, including that of Brenda, the beloved partner of former footballer and sports administrator Alois Bunjira. The fatal collision occurred on August 16 along the Rusape-Nyanga road, when an Isuzu pickup truck attempting to overtake a bus collided head-on with Bunjira’s BMW.
Brenda was the only passenger in Bunjira’s vehicle at the time. Though she was initially admitted to Milton Park Medical Centre in Harare, she tragically succumbed to her injuries. Bunjira sustained injuries in the crash but survived.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirmed the incident via their official X account:
“An Isuzu pickup truck on 16 August, with three passengers on board, tried to overtake a bus along the Rusape-Nyanga road but collided head-on with Bunjira's oncoming car. One person in the Isuzu died on the spot, another passed away upon arrival at the hospital, and the third succumbed to injuries today. The third deceased was a passenger in the BMW and had been admitted to Milton Park Medical Centre in Harare.”
The couple had been travelling to Honde Valley as part of the organising committee for the NetOne Albun Honde Valley Marathon — a project initiated by Bunjira. Their mission was to mark and certify the marathon route as a qualifier for South Africa’s renowned Comrades Marathon.
This tragedy has cast a shadow over the sporting community and beyond, as those who knew the victims grapple with the devastating news.
Our thoughts are with the families, friends, and communities mourning these heartbreaking losses. May the memories of those who have passed bring comfort, and may unity and compassion guide all through this difficult time.
Rest in peace. 🕊️
