Zimbabwe’s Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) has uncovered a WhatsApp scam that has tricked several top government officials and businessmen.
Reports say CIO Director-General Fulton Mangwanya appeared to have lost between R800,000 and R1.5 million to scammers using gold dealer Pedzisayi “Scott” Sakupwanya’s name. However, it was later revealed that the money was part of a secret CIO operation meant to trap the fraudsters.
The suspects, Blessing Vava (not the Crisis Coalition director), Prince James, Solomon Jokonya, and Desmond Mangena, were arrested after trying to scam Mangwanya in a fake business deal.
The scammers clone WhatsApp accounts of well-known people and use them to ask for money or propose fake deals. Many prominent Zimbabweans have fallen victims
Experts warn that WhatsApp can be cloned by linking it to another device or using “dual app” features on smartphones that allow two accounts to run at once.
