THE Marondera community is mourning the death of eight-year-old Tawananyasha Fusire, a Grade One pupil who was fatally struck by a speeding pirate taxi, commonly known as a mushikashika, on her way to school on Friday morning.
What began as an ordinary walk to school turned tragic when the vehicle hit and dragged the young girl for nearly ten metres. Tawananyasha died on the spot, while her two friends sustained injuries and were rushed for medical attention.
Her father, Mr Edmore Fusire, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of his daughter.
“This is so sad to lose such a promising child. I had enrolled her at this school because I wanted a better future for her, but this is how it has ended,” he said.
Local church leader, Bishop Liberty Munhenzva, condemned reckless driving by unlicensed operators.
“These drivers need to be examined to see if their licences are genuine because the way they drive makes you wonder if they are really trained drivers,” he said.
Tawananyasha’s teacher, Mrs Shupikai Shamu, described her as a quiet and obedient learner.
“This child was very quiet and obedient in school, and we are all saddened as a school to lose such a promising star. May her soul rest in peace,” Mrs Shamu said.
Confirming the incident, Mashonaland East ZRP Spokesperson, Inspector Simon Chazovachi, urged motorists to exercise caution.
“We urge our drivers to be cautious on the roads so that we avoid loss of life, especially that of young children like this one.”
While the pirate taxi driver is likely to face legal consequences, no punishment could bring Tawananyasha’s life back.
