An ambulance technician and two accomplices have been convicted in Kwekwe after stealing money from a road accident victim they were meant to help.

Edius Mugonegwa (40), who works for Redcliff Municipality, together with Pride Makamba (25) and Anashe Mukwamba (23), took US$1,260 in cash and US$10 airtime from an injured man during an accident on the Kwekwe–Redcliff Road on 7 September 2025.

While giving first aid, bloodstained cash fell from the victim’s pocket. Instead of protecting the money, Mugonegwa and his accomplices kept it for themselves. The victim later discovered the money missing when he regained consciousness at Kwekwe General Hospital and reported the theft to police. CID Kwekwe quickly investigated and arrested the three, recovering part of the stolen money.

The Kwekwe Magistrates’ Court sentenced Mugonegwa to 18 months in prison, with 3 months suspended for 5 years. The remaining 15 months were converted to 825 hours of community service. Makamba and Mukwamba each received 12 months in prison, with 3 months suspended for 5 years, and the rest set aside for 315 hours of community service.

Authorities condemned the abuse of trust, stressing that medical and emergency workers must protect victims instead of exploiting them.
