Masasi Mauto Gang Granted Bail

Masasi High School Learners Granted Bail in Alleged Gang-Rape Case

Two learners from Masasi High School who are facing serious allegations of gang-raping a 17-year-old female schoolmate have been granted bail by the High Court. The decision allows the accused teenagers to sit for their ZIMSEC Ordinary Level examinations while the legal process continues.

The suspects, aged 16 and 17, were released into the custody of the Department of Social Development following a ruling by Mutare High Court Judge, Justice Isaac Muzenda. Each was ordered to pay US $200 bail and instructed not to interfere with witnesses. They were represented by legal practitioners from the Justice for Children Trust, who successfully argued that the students should be allowed to complete their examinations.

The State, represented by Mr. Malvern Musarurwa, did not oppose the bail application. The learners began writing their examinations on Monday, and their next court date will be set after the exams are completed. The alleged victim has also been placed under the care of the Department of Social Development and is receiving support while sitting for her examinations.

According to court documents, the pair faces multiple charges, including rape, aggravated indecent assault, and indecent assault under the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act. The alleged incident reportedly took place in February 2025 and involved two learners and their 17-year-old schoolmate.

The case has drawn significant public attention, with many parents and community members calling for increased security and stronger child protection measures in schools. Law enforcement officials have assured the public that investigations are ongoing, and justice will follow due legal
