Meet Dr. Mati Hlatshwayo Davis, a Zimbabwean physician with a growing global profile in public health.

 

 

 

Dr. Hlatshwayo Davis was appointed Public Health Director of St. Louis, United States, in 2021, becoming the first Black female physician to hold the post in the city’s 257-year history. 

 

An infectious disease specialist, she moved from Zimbabwe to St. Louis in 2015, driven by a commitment to addressing complex public health challenges, including HIV.

 

 

 

 

Her work spans leadership, research, and public engagement. 

 

Dr. Hlatshwayo Davis serves as an associate editor in the Disparities and Culturally Competent Care section of the Real-Time Learning Network under an Infectious Diseases Society of America and CDC grant.

 

 

 

 

 

She is also a medical contributor to international media outlets, including CNN, BBC, and Al Jazeera, and has published opinion pieces in Newsweek.
