Villagers in Figtree have been left stunned after a 33-year-old man was arrested for allegedly raping three goats, two of which later died from the ordeal.
The suspect, Brighton Mkandla of Cliffton Farm, is accused of repeatedly sneaking into kraals under the cover of darkness to commit the offences. The disturbing acts came to light when villagers noticed their livestock either dead or severely injured.
According to reports, on 15 August 2025, Elmon Ndlovu (65) rushed to his goat pen after hearing unusual noises at around 10 PM. Armed with a torch, he allegedly found Mkandla half-dressed and violating one of his goats. When Elmon called out, Mkandla fled into the night. Footprints traced from the kraal reportedly led straight to his homestead.
Just over two weeks later, on 31 August, another villager, Cecilia Sibanda (85), claimed to have caught the suspect in the middle of a similar act. He once again ran away, but the next morning one of her goats was discovered dead, with injuries consistent with abuse.
Around the same period, Mayibongwe Ndlovu (28) also lost a goat under similar circumstances. His animal was found lifeless in its pen, showing clear signs of strangulation and sexual assault.
The repeated incidents angered the community, prompting villagers to confront Mkandla at his home. He was eventually handed over to police after reportedly admitting to the acts.
Mkandla has since appeared before Plumtree magistrate Joshua Nembaware facing three counts of bestiality. He pleaded not guilty and was remanded in custody until 12 September for trial.
The State is being represented by prosecutor Sheila Nyathi. Meanwhile, some residents are calling for Mkandla to be banished from the area, fearing further attacks on their livestock.
