Mwonzora Declared New MDC-T President Khupe Insists Poll Was Rigged

MDC-T Secretary-General Douglas Mwonzora was declared the party’s new president following a violent and chaotic election which was held at the Harare International Conference Centre (HICC) over the weekend.

The MDC-T party held an Extra-Ordinary Congress (EOC) to choose a new substantive leader to succeed the late Morgan Richard Tsvangirai after the courts declared that Nelson Chamisa was not the legitimate leader of the party.

However, the election which pitted acting President Thokozani Khupe against Mwonzora and senators Elias Mudzuri and Morgen Komichi degenerated into a farce as the other three candidates accused Mwonzora of rigging the elections.

A disgruntled Mudzuri walked out of the process saying that he would not endorse a fraudulent election. Khupe and Komichi had to flee from the venue as militant youths suspected to be aligned to Mwonzora bayed for their blood. Khupe was actually assaulted and slapped as she made her way out of the venue.

Despite the other three candidates withdrawing from the race and declaring it a sham, voting went on well into the night and the results were announced a few hours later.

Mwonzora is reported to have won the poll with a landslide after he polled 883 votes from the 1027 votes which were issued. In second place was Thokozani Khupe, who polled 118 votes. In third place was Mudzuri with 14 votes while Morgen Komichi was the only candidate not to make double digits, as he polled a measly 9 votes.
A jubilant Mwonzora was congratulated by his supporters and colleagues following his victory.

However, after she left the venue in a huff, Khupe declared that she had suspended Mwonzora and that she had cancelled the EOC as the acting President of the party. Mwonzora on the other hand scoffed at the suspension saying that it is an illegality for a contestant to an election to be suspended by another contestant. He also counselled the ‘losers’ of the election to cool down and to accept the will of the people as expressed by the votes.

Khupe, Mudzuri and Komichi are yet to comment on Mwonzora’s
