THE late former Zimbabwe Ex-Political Prisoners, Detainees and Restrictees Association (ZEPPDRA) Chairperson, Cde Victor Kuretu, has been declared a National Hero.
The announcement was made by the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Harare Metropolitan Province, Senator Charles Tawengwa, at the Kuretu family home in Mufakose, Harare, this Saturday.
“I worked with Cde Kuretu for so long including during my tenure at the Harare City Council. We were also in the same Finance Committee with him. After considerations, His Excellency President Emmerson Mnangagwa has sent me here to come and announce that he has conferred national hero status on Cde Kuretu. This is what I am holding here. We are now waiting for you to advise us on burial arrangements,” he said.
ZANU-PF Harare Province Chairperson, Cde Goodwills Masimirembwa, and the ruling party’s Politburo Member, Senator Omega Hungwe, also described the late Cde Kuretu as a dedicated nationalist.
“We have lost a dedicated leader. As Harare Province, we say Cde Kuretu was one of us, whom we worked with so closely,” Cde Masimirembwa noted.
“We are so happy that we are mourning one of us. He was the Chairperson of ZEPEDRA, he was so focused and he remained focused,” Senator Hungwe added.
The family is grateful for the national hero status.
Cde Kuretu died on August 7 at the age of 83 and is survived by his wife Rita Kuretu, eleven children, and thirty-seven grandchildren.
Mourners are gathered at House number 9793 Jiri Crescent, Mufakose in Harare.
