Nine people were killed and 10 wounded in a mass shooting at a tavern in Bekkersdal township near Johannesburg.
The attack, carried out by around 12 suspects with pistols and an AK-47 rifle, targeted patrons inside and people outside the venue.
A massive manhunt is underway, but no suspects have been identified and the motive remains unclear.
