ONE person died while two others were injured in a tragic road mishap when a loaded truck rolled back, veered off the road and overturned on an uphill road in Nyanga on Sunday evening.
The accident occurred when the driver left the vehicle unattended to investigate an unusual sound that the tyres were producing.
Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, confirmed the incident that occurred near the 15km peg along Aberfoyle Road.Lawrence Uta was on June 22 around 7pm driving a Hino Ranger truck loaded with sugarcane being transported to Mbare Musika. While traveling towards Selborne Road, he stopped the vehicle on an uphill, curvy section of the road to inspect an unusual sound coming from the tyres. While he was still outside, the truck began to roll backward and veered to the left. It overturned and landed on its roof,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.
He said a passenger was trapped under the load of sugarcane and died on the spot, while two others sustained injuries.Nyanga traffic police attended the scene. The deceased’s body was taken to Hauna Hospital for postmortem, while the injured were also taken to the same hospital,” he said.
Assistant Inspector Chinyoka urged drivers to exercise caution at all times on the road.
