Mhepo dzasimuka? | Businessman Victor Magigwana lost almost US$80,000 in cash after it was seized by ZIMRA at Robert Gabriel Mugabe Airport. He was arrested for trying to leave Zimbabwe with the cash without declaring it or getting approval, which is required for any amount over US$2,000.
Police had received a tip-off that he planned to smuggle the money out of the country, so he was closely monitored from the time he arrived at the airport. After passing through security without declaring the cash, he was stopped just before boarding a Tanzania Airlines flight.
He was later released on US$300 bail. ZIMRA kept US$78,000 and only gave him US$2,000, which is the maximum amount allowed without prior approval.Businessman Nabbed at Airport with Undeclared US$80,000
Customs officials at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport intercepted a Harare businessman moments before he boarded a flight to Tanzania, seizing US$80,000 in undeclared cash.
Victor Magigwana (32) was later released on US$300 bail by regional magistrate Jesse Kufa after being charged under the Exchange Control Act.
Prosecutors say detectives from the CID Commercial Crime Division had received a tip-off that Magigwana planned to smuggle money out of the country and placed him under surveillance from the time he arrived at the airport.
He allegedly cleared security without declaring the cash but was stopped just before boarding a Tanzania Airlines flight. The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority confiscated the bulk of the money, returning US$2,000 — the maximum travellers can take out without Reserve Bank approval.
