Nigerian onion traders have suspended exports to Ghana, citing ongoing harassment, intimidation, and the seizure of their trucks by local trader groups in Accra.
The decision has raised concerns about potential disruptions to market activities and possible shortages of onions in Ghana. The dispute escalated after a confrontation between Ghanaian and Nigerian traders, which reportedly led to the confiscation of trucks transporting onions from Nigeria.
According to the Nigerian Onion Producers and Marketers Association, the suspension of all shipments through the Ghana corridor will continue until the safety and rights of Nigerian traders are assured. Nigeria remains one of West Africa’s largest onion producers, supplying significant quantities to neighbouring countries, including Ghana.
The onion trade also plays a vital role in supporting the livelihoods of farmers in northern Nigeria. #DWAfrica
