Sungura Legend Nicholas Zakaria Dies at 66 After Long Illness

Zimbabwe has been plunged into mourning following the death of Nicholas “Madzibaba” Zakaria, the beloved Sungura legend celebrated as the Senior Lecturer of Zimbabwean music. For over four decades, he shaped the nation’s soundtrack, mentored giants like Alick Macheso, and built the iconic Khiama Boys into a cultural institution loved across Zimbabwe and beyond.

Zakaria had been battling diabetes, hypertension, and recurring leg swelling, conditions he openly shared with fans as his health declined in recent years. Even as illness weakened his body, his spirit remained unshaken — he continued to speak with humility, gratitude, and hope, asking Zimbabweans to keep him in their prayers.

His passing has sparked an emotional wave online, with fans sharing memories, classic songs, and heartfelt tributes. Many credit him for raising a generation of musicians and inspiring millions with music that carried people through celebrations, hardships, and everyday life.

Today Zimbabwe doesn’t just lose a musician — it loses a cultural father, a teacher, and a humble servant of the arts.

Rest in peace, Senior Lecturer. Your music will never die.
