Traces of HIV medicine found in South Africa’s rivers and tap water

 

A study by researchers at North-West University in South Africa has found worrying amounts of HIV medication in rivers, dams, and even in some tap water.

 

 

 

 

The research, released on July 13, 2025, showed that drugs like lopinavir and efavirenz, which are used to treat HIV, were found in high levels in water that comes out of wastewater treatment plants.

 

Experts say South Africa’s large HIV treatment program is likely the main reason for this. They are now concerned about how this might affect people’s
