A tragic incident unfolded on the Zambezi River in Binga on Saturday, when a woman, Brenda Nyoni, lost her life after being attacked by a crocodile. The attack occurred during a leisure outing on a river island, highlighting the dangers posed by wildlife in the area.
According to Matabeleland North police spokesperson, Inspector Glory Banda, Nyoni was accompanied by her husband, Taylor Bruce, and two other companions. The group had arrived at the island on Saturday around 3:00 pm using a speed boat, intending to enjoy the river and take photographs.
“On arrival at the island, Sithembokuhle Baloyi and Brenda Nyoni (the now deceased) entered into the water, taking pictures while Bruce and Sinodia Kambambula were seated outside on the sands of the Island. Nyoni and Baloyi allegedly went on to lie in the water and continued taking pictures, suddenly, a crocodile emerged from the water and grabbed Nyoni, threw her three times into the air, and pulled her deep into the water.
“After a few minutes, the informant, Bruce, saw Nyoni emerging from the water, and he tried to pull her out of the water but failed because the crocodile came back with full force, grabbed, and disappeared with her deep into the water,” Inspector Banda said.
The matter was reported to Binga Police, who attended the scene together with ZimParks and Sub Aqua teams.
Upon searching the area, the team discovered clothes believed to have been worn by Nyoni when she was attacked by the crocodile.
The team also searched the waters and recovered some pieces of flesh suspected to be the victim’s floating on the water.
Zimparks killed the crocodile suspected of killing the deceased and extracted body parts from its stomach.
