The American Dream has come to a devastating end for Tinaye Maphosa, a Zimbabwean man who spent over 25 years living in the United States, after being abruptly deported by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) this week — not to his home country, but to Kenya.
Maphosa, a well-known New Jersey resident and devoted single father of three, was taken into ICE custody during what officials described as a “routine immigration review.” In just 48 hours, he was placed on a flight out of the country, separated from his children and sent to a nation where he has no immediate family or home.
Shocking videos circulating on TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram show the emotional farewell at Newark Liberty International Airport. His three children — two teenagers and one younger child — can be seen crying hysterically, clinging to their father as ICE officers led him away.
“He’s all they have,” said a close friend. “Their mom isn’t in the picture. Tinaye has been their rock since day one. Now he’s been dumped in Kenya, a country he doesn’t even belong to.”
Friends say Maphosa was deeply involved in his community, working multiple jobs to support his kids and volunteering at local youth programs. His sudden deportation has sparked outrage across social media under hashtags like #JusticeForTinaye and #BringTinayeHome, with thousands questioning why he was sent to Kenya instead of Zimbabwe.
ICE has yet to release an official explanation for the deportation or why Kenya was chosen as his destination.
For now, Tinaye Maphosa is stranded in Nairobi, living temporarily with acquaintances, and trying to figure out his next move — while his three children remain in New Jersey, struggling to cope without their father.
