A 26-year-old Zimbabwean man, Lyon Chinyemba, is facing deportation proceedings in Maryland after his American wife reported him to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The dramatic fallout comes amid accusations of infidelity and deception.
Chinyemba, who was in the process of applying for a U.S. green card, had introduced another Zimbabwean woman to his wife as his “aunt.” According to reports, he claimed the woman was helping watch the couple’s children.
However, it later emerged that the woman was not a relative at all, but someone Chinyemba was allegedly involved with romantically.
When the truth surfaced, Chinyemba’s wife took a decisive and unexpected step. Instead of handling the matter privately, she reportedly contacted ICE and filed a report. Her action has placed her husband’s immigration status in jeopardy, with his green card application now likely to be rejected.
Immigration experts note that being reported by a spouse during a pending green card process can severely damage one’s case. If deported, Chinyemba could face a lengthy ban from re-entering the United States.
The incident has sparked debate within both the Zimbabwean diaspora and the wider community in Maryland. Some sympathized with the wife’s actions, calling them justified, while others criticized the decision, suggesting that family issues should not have been escalated to immigration authorities.
“It’s shocking — lying that your girlfriend is your aunt is betrayal on another level,” said one community member.
