LONDON, UK – The Zimbabwean community in the UK is in shock after 34-year-old Rutendo Masawi was arrested for running a large-scale online scam that targeted elderly people across the country.
Police say Rutendo used fake identities and fake charities to trick seniors into donating thousands of pounds, which she then funneled into offshore accounts. The scam reportedly lasted over two years, leaving many victims financially devastated.
Community leaders have called for stronger awareness campaigns to protect vulnerable populations and highlight the dangers of online fraud. Rutendo is currently awaiting trial, and authorities warn anyone who donated to suspicious causes to check their finances immediately.
