ZRP Arrests Seven Executives Over Illegal Alcohol Manufacturing in Zimbabwe

Harare – July 1, 2025 The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has arrested seven senior company executives linked to a large-scale illegal alcohol production operation. The group is accused of manufacturing unlicensed alcoholic beverages using a dangerous mix of ethanol, tap water, and artificial flavours, which they then distributed to shops and members of the public across the country. According to police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the arrests followed a joint operation between ZRP, the Ministry of Health, and ZIMRA. Authorities recovered over 4,000 litres of unregistered liquor, several sealing machines, and packaging materials designed to mimic popular brands. The Bulawayo Regional Magistrates’ Court has sentenced 3 inmates to 20 years imprisonment each for aggravated indecent assault.   On December 29, 2024, at approximately 2100hours, during a power outage at Bulawayo Prison, three inmates, aged 30, 24, and 29, who were cellmates with the 20 year old victim aggravated indecently assaulted the victim. The incident began when the 1st offender, aged 30, approached the victim and asked him to sleep near him, which the victim refused. The 1st offender then returned with another 2nd offender, aged 24, and both insisted that the victim come to their sleeping space and the victim continued to refuse. A Zimbabwean national, Tatenda Banga, has pleaded guilty in a Seattle court to two federal felonies following his illegal border crossings from Canada into Washington State. Acting U.S. Attorney Teal Luthy Miller announced the plea, noting that Banga, 30, was detected twice in 2024 by surveillance cameras near Hozomeen in the North Cascades. The victim who was found murdered in an eastside Athens apartment this week has been identified as Esnati Thalani Gurura, a 48-year-old Zimbabwean woman.
