.
Two pickups were crushed when a truck’s heavy container fell on them at the busy intersection of Robert Mugabe Road and Glenara Avenue in Harare, just a few metres from Rhodesville. The dramatic accident happened after a Ford Ranger and a Toyota D4D, which had earlier collided, were waiting for police at the roadside. Witnesses described scenes of panic as the load toppled and landed on the stationary vehicles.
According to witnesses, the incident began when a Ford Ranger was bumped from behind by a Toyota D4D. The two drivers disembarked and waited by the roadside for the police to arrive.
A heavy truck then approached the intersection, intending to turn from Robert Mugabe Road into Glenara Avenue. In trying to manoeuvre around the two pickups, the truck partly mounted the pavement.
The truck’s container then shifted. Overcome by gravity, it toppled off the vehicle and landed directly on top of the Ford Ranger and Toyota D4D.Eyewitnesses at the scene explained how quickly the situation unfolded. One witness said:
“The truck driver wanted to go round the two pickups. As he went up the pavement, the load started moving. In a moment, it just fell onto the two cars.”
Another bystander described the shock of those standing nearby.
“People screamed as the load came down. Everyone thought someone might have been trapped, but luckily both drivers had stepped out of their vehicles.”
