40 Zimbabweans Feared Dead in South Africa Cross-Border Bus Crashleast 40 Zimbabweans are feared dead and dozens more injured following a horrific bus crash on the N1 highway near Makhado, in South Africa’s Limpopo Province.
The bus, which was travelling from Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth) to Harare, reportedly veered off the road before overturning near Ingwe Lodge, just outside Makhado, late Sunday evening.Emergency services rushed to the scene, where rescue operations were still underway by early Monday morning. Provincial Transport Department spokesperson Matome Taueatsoala confirmed the tragedy, saying the exact cause of the crash was still under investigation.
“We can confirm that a major accident involving a cross-border bus has occurred on the N1 near Ingwe Lodge, outside Makhado, on the way to Musina. The details of the accident are yet to be released, and MEC Violet Mathye has gone to the scene,” said Taueatsoala.
He added that the N1 highway had been closed in both directions, with traffic being diverted to alternative routes.
“If you’re travelling from Makhado to Musina, please use the Witvlag turn-off; and if you’re coming from Musina to Makhado, take the Williespoort turn-off,” Taueatsoala said.
The bus was believed to be carrying mainly Zimbabwean nationals returning home ahead of the holiday season.Police and road traffic authorities are working with Zimbabwean consular officials to identify the victims and assist survivors.
The Limpopo provincial government has expressed condolences to the bereaved families, describing the crash as one of the worst cross-border road disasters in recent months.
